pinned post!
Days 1 (yesterday) and 2 of my 60 day challenge of Japanese flash cards now complete. Trying to become serious about learning the language. After this stage I will start incorporating more translation and listening practice. Ultimate goal is JLPT N5.

Summary:IMO this is a poorly-designed, egregiously unethical study. There is NO scientific evidence to support it. To do it in Guinea Bissau is perfectly vile, and to farm it out to Denmark to avoid US ethics boards is disgraceful. Would not be surprised if one of Hoeg’s buddies got the $$. 7/7

Another red flag is this: “The award is being made non-competitively because there is no current, pending, or planned funding opportunity announcement under which this proposal could compete”. IMO this means that RFK Jr. simply handed the money over to the Denmark team without legit review. 6/7

A red flag for this study is that it is a single-blind study. This means that while parents of infants will not be informed if their baby is not protected against HepB, the researchers *will* know. And that knowledge results in bias, which is why double-blind trials are the gold standard. 5/7

Such a study would not pass any ethics board in the U.S., which is why, IMO, RFK Jr. is taking this offshore and preying on an extremely vulnerable population. He does not care how many people have to die in Guinea-Bissau, just like he did not care in Samoa and he does not care in the U.S. 4/7

Infants who are denied the birth dose will be, for no legitimate scientific purpose, at risk for chronic HepB infection, liver failure, cancer, and premature mortality in adulthood. This is especially egregious in Guinea-Bissau, where adult prevalence of active HepB is 18.7% (In US it’s 4.3%). 3/7

Through decades of research, HepB vaccine at birth has already been demonstrated be safe and effective, and has in the U.S. reduced childhood HepB infection by 99% since it was implemented. It is unethical to administer a placebo to infants instead of a vaccine that is known to work. 2/7.

RFK Jr. has awarded $1.6 million to a group in Denmark to conduct a randomized, single-blind study of the birth dose of Hepatitis B vaccine (HepB) to be conducted in Guinea-Bissau. In my opinion, this is, quite simply, completely unethical, unacceptable, and predatory. Here’s why. 1/7

The media needs to stop writing headlines like “The CDC changes course on vaccines and autism” and “The CDC defends measles response”. NONE of this is coming from legitimate scientists at the CDC. ALL of it is coming from RFK Jr. Every such headline is causing further harm to public health.

What was most annoying about that game was the Colts defense wasn’t doing anything particularly special or looked scary. We literally just could not get out of our own way.
