The main thing AI has taught me is a profound new appreciation for human intelligence (and human writing and art!), particularly that which emerges from longstanding experience, expertise and mastery.

I keep seeing "all authors use AI, the real issue is they're being forced to be sneaky about it" headlines. Full stop No. This is a lie peddled for normalization. It's schoolyard-level pressure tactics "C'mon, all the cool kids are already doing it. We won't tell. It's fine. We're on your side."

I had the honour of illustrating the cover of @unwinnable.com’s final fantasy edition. Inspired by the way the concept art felt like a peek into some land that couldn’t be captured in pixels or polygons, no matter how many there ended up being packed in as time went on. Unknowable and sublime.

The reason why the sketchy drawing is better than AI reference are the economical choices made. The person only drew what was most important and nothing else which gives clear direction! Please do more of this!

Most of us did not choose to write or draw or design so that we could put products on the shelf. We chose to do it because it’s a set of skills we enjoy exercising, that give us fulfillment. It’s like asking a pro pitcher to just let a machine pitch for them. Fuck off and give me the ball.

This is such a misunderstanding of why writers, artists, and designers do research to begin with, which is to find something unexpected, not capture the average or find reference for the default. And, as always, the biggest misapprehension: We don’t want to NOT do this part. It’s fun to learn shit

I really had never appreciated the value of the hard parts of creative work fully before genAI showed up with its genie-like offer of shortcuts, or understood what a trap those shortcuts truly are.
