If you're getting into Scotland at the World Cup and you're a fan of comics, then you can always read the adventures of the Mighty Scotsman in the United series. No Scotsman, no party.

The Justice Society Of America, by Alex Toth, 1981. Ah, Alex Toth: one of the very few artists who could make a shot of super-heroes (mostly) sitting down convincing, fascinating & compelling.

Thinking today of my late studiomate Jesse Hamm. He drew a lot of great pictures and wrote wonderful essays on the art and craft of illustration and cartooning. Here's a link to one of my favorite of his essays, on Alex Toth and cartoon realism:

Steve Ditko knew when he was working on the Creepy and Eerie anthologies that he'd be rubbing shoulders with the likes of John Severin, Alex Toth and Wally Wood, so he rolled up his sleeves and brought his A-game. Damn!

The British Marvel weeklies in the early 70s used to be mostly B&W, but they'd add additional tones and also a single colour on some pages. The effect this had on Steve Ditko's work was WILD. Some examples: 🧵

Great selection for its (mostly) huge enthusiasm and cheating choices too good to leave out! Your joint number one reminds me: Two problems with The Guardian’s “Greatest Novels of All Time” are that it complacently omits the future and they didn’t put that this graphic novel (of the future) on it.

I've been wondering about Gil Elvgren's influence on comic artists. Most recently, I've been studying John Buscema's work and I wonder if he incorporated any of Elvgren's anatomical technique into his own construction.

Zenith had a pretty big influence on the type of comics I wanted to make. It's the closest 2000AD got to replicating that Marvel UK vibe.
