Alex Toth draws a group of men running into a swimming pool in Wings of Eagles. He takes care to alternate their leg movements so they have a left-right-left-right running motion. 🧵

There are many ways to suggest motion in comics. A subtle one is to place a group of figures that resemble each other in a left-to-right pattern, each showing a progression of movement. Hergé has a group of Arabs getting up and retreating, but the reader unconsciously sees it as a single figure. 🧵

After watching Hell in the Pacific I had the urge to rewatch the other John Boorman movie with Lee Marvin. Point Blank is a fantastically unsettling experience; the time jumps are disconcerting as hell. Amazing compositions. Marvin is equal parts unstoppable and deeply vulnerable. Love it.

I just got an incredible book about the Scorchy Smith artist Noel Sickles. I am so impressed by him, a massive cut above almost everybody. I love Canniff and Raynmond, Hal Foster and Will Eisner, but I tell you Sickles is in a league of his own. One of the greatest American illustrators of all time

How great an illustrator was Robert Fawcett, particularly during the 1950s? Gentle sentients, I offer you this single illustration by him for Adrian Conan Doyle & John Dickson Carr’s “Sherlock Holmes & The Adventure of the Black Baronet”, from a 1953 Colliers Magazine. He was the bees’ knees, no?
