So here’s what 10 years of rejections looked like — 2025: 51 2024: 52 2023: 79 2022: 70 2021: 72 2020: 56 2019: 31 2018: 39 2017: 33 2016: 42 That makes for 525 rejections across a decade. But I also had 55 stories accepted across the same span. So remember — Never give up! Never surrender!

I finally got hold of Toth "One for the Road". I knew it was great from the Cartoonist Kayfabe review, the pages I've seen online and the issues of Hot Rod Cartoons and Dragtoons that I've got, but it's beyond anything I'd expected. It's imperious work by a master.

Critical to know that McCay drew in black and white and gave his engraver, Mr. Hunt, loose instructions. The art is McCay; the glorious color, the little-known Hunt.

I'm a sucker for bisecting panels diagonally, and I love the way he's got the baddies framed by the tree branches. And of course, there's the ace texturing on all the foliage. I've come to the conclusion that silver birches are the best trees for comics - they even look drawn in real life!

Toth (1952) was so versatile. His continued experimentation just pushed the form. He was in his early to mid 20s when he drew this.

For DROME, I wanted a character who was mainly defined by color instead of linework. When I started the book, I wasn’t confident I’d be able to do it with my coloring skills, but hoped I would get good enough by the time the character made their appearance at the end of chapter two.
