Of the many artist tributes out there, I think about this Akira piece by Alex Toth often. Otomo feels like someone who is the exact antithesis of Toths philosophy; pure hyper-maximimalism over stripped-down gestural brevity. I can't help but wonder what Toth thought of Akira.

I was kind of curious if Anno's "artists peak at 30" quote had something to do with ageism in the industry or with too much accommodation paralyzing a successful director, but it didn't. I also wonder if he's frustrated that so many assume HE peaked when he was in his 30s.
