newspaper comic strips had a place and a home. They were part of your newspaper and were present in your life in a small, recurring and daily way. Direct market comics are part of a ritualistic lifestyle of visiting a place, reading and then arguing about it in another space

My ongoing and permanent project is to find a culture for comics. I struggle because comics seem to be hanging on, wedged into spaces where they might be allowed to survive. But they don’t seem to have a native home anymore

In all seriousness, publishers are going to have to figure out how to market books in the post-social-media landscape. That should be an implicit part of their job. What authors/artists can do on their own is increasingly limited and siloed.
