Fantastic example of the effects of language contact on today's Tagesschau (German news). The newscaster reads so many American words with American r's (President Trump, Arizona) that immediately afterwards they pronounce a German word with an American r (gereist). Start at the ten second mark.

Finally watching The Last Kingdom and have encountered one of my historical/fantasy writing pet peeves, which is having just one or two 'old-timey' ways to say something like 'money' and then using them over and over again almost like proper nouns. In tLK, 'silver' and 'wealth;' like 'coin' Skyrim.

I carry a cloth tape measure in my purse. You would not BELIEVE the number of times this has come in handy! Just being able to definitively tell whether X will fit in Y before picking up and moving something. Giving measurements over the phone. Impromptu rope.

Every now and then, as a writer, you come up with an idea better than you deserve, and for me, I always come back to a stray bit of wirldbuilding— idea of fiercely benevolent year-gods that go out to fight off the calamities that would otherwise befall us.
