I am not an apologist but if you think what happened in the Soviet Union in the 1960s/1970s is worse than what happened to Russia in the 1990s you are either deeply ignorant or intellectually dishonest.

The only way to argue against this is to imagine there are voters who will walk into a polling place one year from now with “the Democrats ended the shutdown last year and saved my Thanksgiving travel plans” at the forefront of their minds, which, I’m sorry, is not a real thing.

There is no risk- or cost-free way to stand up to authoritarianism and if we all have to suffer the inconveniences of disrupted air travel, then we do. Competent politicians could talk to the country like adults and get that point across. No excuses.

This is why you DON'T stop the shutdown. Clearly the voters know who's responsible for the shutdown and now it's gonna be even worse. Since the news isn't willing to be honest with Americans about what Trump was and is, this will have to do so they can get the message.

Worth noting that the diplomatic implications of striking down Trump’s tariff authority are pretty significant. Tariffs are the duct tape holding together most of Trump’s “deals.” If tariff authority becomes uncertain the deals themselves get pretty wobbly.
