You can collect all the macroeconomic data you want, but we are meant to believe that millions of people having to pay student loans after a multiyear reprieve, child poverty doubling again after being cut in half, and credit card debt soaring isn't relevant and it's just vibes?

If the UK government privatized the NHS, we would expect that party to get wiped out in the next election. Same for a party in the US that gutted Medicaid or Social Security. Why would we not similarly expect large effects from having a Euro-style welfare state eliminated over a couple years?

Consumer sentiment it as an all-time low. It was at it's highest since the Great Recession when we had a pop-up welfare state. When we argue for the vibecession, we are essentially making the assumption that the whole country ~knew~ it was only temporary. I don't know why we would assume that.

Something never discussed in the "vibecession" debate is that the country lived through a huge expansion of the welfare state and then saw all of those programs taken away. It has long been conventional wisdom that taking away social programs leads to huge backlash. Nobody applies that to COVID.

Being awarded political power is not supposed to be a default expectation. They're supposed to be the ones responding to what we want, not vice versa, and definitely not telling us what we cant have. Democracy has fundamentally failed if the opposite is true
