As soon as you back down on sports you've effectively conceded the argument for trans rights to the bigots. That's how wedge issues work, it's the blade end of the axe-head, and you've stipulated to their basic premise

I will die on the hill that trans kids should be allowed to play sports with whatever gender they identify with, because youth sports are not a societal good beyond providing a place of acceptance for the kids who play them, fucking fight me.
