I'm not sure how much it means โย and it doesn't prove that the Canadian system is inherently superior โ but it does occur to me that a local candidate in a Canadian election who was revealed to have a questionable tattoo probably would have been dropped within 24 hours of the revelation.

there is a cohort of men who resent the responsibilities and obligations of adulthood โ of the fact that you owe things to other people. it is a fundamentally childish impulse that they have reconfigured as the height of masculinity, and i think it informs the parasocial attraction to platner.

The race to replace Graham Platner is on. Troy Jackson, the former Maine State Senate president, has filed exploratory committee paperwork with the Federal Election Commission. Jackson had been running for governor, but lost the Democratic nomination last month.

I was always pretty skeptical about the "non-partisan Senate" but more than that a lot of Liberals I spoke with since 2015 assumed they'd won an argument and established a new quasi-constitutional norm that nobody would ever dare reverse and... just no? The Tories never accepted the premise!

Among other things, the latest turn in the Platner story is a good example of why journalists need to get off X for professional and personal reasons, not just ethical ones. The writers who gassed his campaign up and now need to walk it back are mostly people who cooked their brains on X.

Correct your priors: Private money is going after clean energy, governments are using public money to prop up fossil fuels "About 59% of all money spent on the fossil fuel system came from taxpayers in 2015. By 2025, that climbed to 68% and spiked at 78% in 2022."

It's kind of funny that one way Canada *could* find a few hundred thousand barrels of spare capacity would be to rapidly electrify the vast majority of what's currently gasoline and diesel use but we won't do that because that too hurts Alberta's fee fees.

This is a prime example of why right-wing populism slides so easily into antisemitism. You need a populist framing of "the people" versus "the elites," but you can't frame the elites in strictly economic terms, or else you end up with leftism. Hence you need another way to define "elites."

Canada lost to Morocco 3-0 after a great first half, and their World Cup is over. And as far as Canada came in a run to the round of 16, what you saw was a young football country, with so many deficiencies compared to elite nations, and so much room to grow.
