I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

Our college dorm had a VT220 terminal in the common room with a cold solder joint in the monitor. I'd figured exactly where and how hard to whack it to apply "fixing force” so that it would turn back on. Occasionally I'd be summoned by my dorm mates to miraculously fix the thing by hitting it.

As someone who, while growing up, had measles, rubella, and many other horrible illnesses now preventable by vaccination, I simply cannot fathom why people want to revert to that time. I spent a lot of time in bed or at the hospital as a child. Yes, I survived, but not by much. Why go back there?
