Shameless Garda PR blitz links road deaths to visibility issues in cases where there is no link
Comment & Analysis: Sadly, I have to start this article by saying, for the avoidance of doubt, nothing in this article says 'don't be visible'. Lights are a legal requirement, and it'd be a good start if the Gardai enforced them, and people walking should take steps to be visible on unlit roads. I get it, nobody likes it when people are walking on unlit roads in the dark without lights and wearing dark clothing, and it's annoying when some cyclists think they are ninjas.

A lot of what's happening is farmers extending their buildings/boundaries illegally onto the Irish Rail owned land over the years. Irish Rail need to re-assert their ownership of ALL existing lands that ARE owned by the taxpayer not these cute hoor farmers.

It has rained before in Galway, forever. Bus shelters have been debated before, ad nauseam. Decades pass. Year after year, neither Galway City Council nor the National Transport Authority are able to get their act together enough to fix the system.

Cllr Frank Fahy described the lack of shelters as “beyond a joke”, as if commuters would walk 20 minutes to stand in the rain, instead of driving, “and for a bus that may not even come”. The NTA said responsibility for bus shelters lies with the local authority.

It's not an exaggeration to say that high car usage and poor buses are an explicit policy choice. This is why the promises of a transport mecca post Galway ring road from agencies and parties with decades of neglecting public transport is such obvious BS.

Would be nice to get some creative thinking around Galway's traffic congestion problem. Affordable housing so people can live in the city. Decent bus schedules from the more rural areas that have now become the commuter belt into Galway. Or, absolutely wild suggestion, a commuter train?

Pedestrianisation is not "wrong", but the value of the term "car free" is that it admits the possibility of some demotorised zones where both walking and cycling are allowed. It doesn't have to be absolute, and could be decided case by case. Unfortunately the Council is far too heavy-handed.

Caveat: a large chunk of the city centre has already been made hostile to cycling. Going car-free is good, for numerous reasons, but obliterating the utility of cycling in the process is a massive own goal.

Given that pavement parking is now a cultural norm, despite its long-established illegality, there's a non-zero probability that those cars are owned by people taking part in the protest.
