UPDATE: New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill said Sunday the Department of Homeland Security agreed to restore family visitation at Delaney Hall, the ICE detention center where people have been protesting for more than a week. Ali Bauman has the latest.

The protests have been forced back so far today that you can’t even see Delaney Hall. Yet, the police presence is still here and still heavy. As long as people are inside, people will be outside.

We’ve been standing outside the barricade on Wilson Ave for two hours now. There have been rumors to expect violence from the police soon. ICE agents are not here. We are half mile away from Delaney Hall. But that won’t stop police from still escalating.

The Delaney Hall hunger strikers’ number one demand is to meet with Governor Sherrill. She made one attempt to enter, was denied by ICE and never tried again.

Just a reminder that immigrants inside Delaney Hall are on their ninth day of a hunger and labor strike in protest of inhumane conditions and this was Governor Sherrill’s response last night:

Delaney Hall was never approved to be reopened. No permits were issued for its renovation. They just…did it. GEO Group & ICE refused safety inspections prior to opening, saying they’d be “shams” the city would use to prevent their opening. To my knowledge, there’s never been any fire inspection.
