It needs to be said: There is no resisting fascism without some level of risk incurred. It's true that some people are bigger targets, but the point of mass solidarity is to spread the risk around and reduce it for everyone.

One underdiscussed part of the shutdown fight is that Trump has created an impression that he controls the whole government, so if it shuts down and he has to blame Democrats for not giving him money he needs, it pops that entire aura. With the aforementioned exception of people with risky immigration status, I’d actually encourage everyone to challenge the administration. It’s not a totally risk-free endeavor, but most forms of protest are low risk, and we’re not going to beat them only doing things that entail no risk.

It’s incredible how easy it is to get people on Blue Sky to argue that challenging the Trump administration is too dangerous, just by framing it around privilege and not the need to resist encroaching authoritarianism.

I think this was one reason why that, when I was coming of age politically in my teens and very early 20s, I had an instinctive mistrust if not outright hatred for a lot of the pageantry mentioned here. I truly felt that many of its practitioners believed in not a whiff of it - and I was right.
