Community is a verb. Mutual aid is the practice of communities meeting each other’s needs without waiting for permission. Even though it’s warming up, it’s still below 32 degrees. Too cold for anyone experiencing homelessness to be outside.

Yesterday, a member came through with a flatbed, boxes of diapers piled yea high. "This isn't even half of the fund I've got: it's all that'll fit in my van." About an hour later, they came through again, flatbed stacked to the same height with food.

Non-MN folks, know that the vast bulk of the resistance here is care work like this: distributing food, shoveling snow, driving people places. Most has to be done in strict secrecy, & even what’s public is quiet. The resistance you see in videos is just the tip of an gigantic iceberg of solidarity ❤️‍🔥

Farmers from up north of Duluth sent two pickup trucks full of eggs and meat and food to us for mutual aid distribution. I cried. People are so good.

The reason we do mutual aid & the reason why mutual aid is grounded in anticapitalist theory from a long time is that capitalism says your survival depends on what you can do for people. We say, no you deserve to survive by virtue of your humanity. If you can't produce, we will help you survive.

I didn’t even clean their kitchen for real. I did dishes, took out trash and recycling, put dishes away, and dry wiped surfaces. Even an hour of care work support makes a huge difference for people who are also already doing lots of care work.

We have shipped 325,686 whistles in February (these last 12 days) so far. This is about 651 kg of filament that we have gone through. It really does help to get gift cards for non-Amazon sources!

In 2021, Greg Abbott abandoned unhoused Texans to die in unsurvivable cold. We quietly coalesced to fundraise money for hotel rooms then drove virtually every unhoused person to a safe, warm place to ride out the storm. Direct actions like these are more effective when they fly under the radar.

People are moving literal millions of dollars through every possible stream- but commonly just from one checking account to another via a variety of personal money moving channels- to pay as many rents as possible at a scale I’ve not seen in my lifetime.

Amplifying this again because what Yusra said here keeps ringing in my ear. The state took no material actions to prevent this catastrophe. The mayor’s office took no actions. The mighty NPIC could not meet the moment with the nimbleness required. It’s the people making a Herculean attempt.
