When I went down to cover Hurricane Helene response, just after the storm, Firestorm had thrown its doors open and people were filling up water, fixing generators, building composting toilets, everything. Proving that anarchy works, that we keep us safe. All the best cliches, Firestorm proves true.

Firestorm, alongside other worker-owned places like @redemmas.org, really show that bookstores can be more than just places of business. That they can be amazing community centers and mutual aid hubs. Maintaining infrastructure is hard and thankless work. We should help people do it.

Firestorm becoming a mutual aid disaster hub during Helene is such a powerful example. Queer community spaces already have the infrastructure of trust and logistics. In crisis, those networks activate faster than any top down response. The capacity was always there.
