once upon a time I had very strong opinions about hypothetical imperatives.
this is all true. but also, I am totally fine with a purity test that consists of "no nazi tattoos".

ICE conducted raids in Manhattan's Chinatown this afternoon and returned to the federal building during rush hour. Residents gathered nearby to voice disapproval. NYPD says it wasn't involved in the raids but now is running counterprotest operations. Current "sanctuary" laws only get you so far.

I think once Mamdani is formally the winner of this race people will be more willing to admit it, but the truth is that the real issue isn't the lack of endorsement from Schumer and Jeffries, it's that Schumers, Jeffries, and everyone else has made racially charged unfulfillable demands of Mamdani.

Last night, on Diwali, I had the pleasure of accompanying
@zohrankmamdani.bsky.social
to two different temples, where he was asked to light the pradip and was given a kautuka. 🪔 One of the priests also asked him if he wanted to modify his past statements criticizing Modi, and this is what he said.

all of these people would do well to learn something about “cheap” and “costly” grace. no one is saying that platner is irredeemable, but that some things are a bridge too far for someone seeking a public trust. if he feels truly contrite, he can work on himself and his community and try again.

Given the location of the Jackson Magnolia (which was removed back in April due to previous damage & deteriorating health, though a sapling descended from it was planted in its place), it is unlikely that it was actually removed as part of this desecration of the People's House.

The civil rights movement was an iceberg. It was huge, and mostly invisible. No Kings, right now, is a building—it's pretty big, but we can see it all. If we compare the size of the tip of the iceberg to the size of the building, and we declare the building bigger, we misunderstand both.

The fight against fascism in America—the real mass fight—is in its early stages. We have a long road ahead of us. We need to think seriously about where we are and where we've been in order to engage that fight effectively.

He did sign an AI safety bill that has been hailed by the NYT and elsewhere as "sweeping" but in reality it is toothless, byzantine, and doomed to be ineffective. It requires the biggest AI companies to post their safety protocols on a website and voluntary report "catastrophic risk." That's it.

I get that some people are worried about transit crime. The right response isn't to reallocate agencies' (already stretched) budgets toward public safety. It's to help the public understand that there is nothing to fear -- and to loudly condemn those like USDOT Sec Duffy who are spreading lies.
