For what it's worth, I think this assessment is substantially correct. The UK has now returned, all but in form, to the legal landscape that gave rise to the ECtHR decision in Goodwin, ie in breach of the ECHR. I don't see how it cannot be the case

This stat highlights more than any other how Labour chasing Reform supporters has been a disastrous strategy... these voters are not coming back.

So the one minister with Treasury experience is a no-go because he‘ll spook the markets, while a minister with no treasury experience, who hasn’t expressed a single idea on fiscal policy, and whose main contribution to the economy will be negative won’t be? Sorry, this is just ridiculous.

I would also question the wisdom of putting someone who does not really share your politics but is really quite aggressive in the most powerful department. That is a much bigger risk than simply getting rid of her.

It would be v.depressing though. Almost impossible to put together an argument on experience or expertise which would justify her presence there. Her behaviour at the Home Office has been short sighted and temperamental at best, which are not exactly the qualities you look for.

The optimistic take on this is that it gets her out the Home Office without pissing off the right. The pessimistic take is that you're putting someone with no economic expertise in charge of the Treasury. Both can be true at the same time.

I remain unconvinced that someone who has expressed no previous interest in fiscal policy, has no obvious economic policy expertise and whose views on the topic are unknown is an ideal candidate for Chancellor.

I found this story genuinely shocking to report. The legislation has expanded so much that now the grounds on which citizenship can be stripped are incredibly vague and there is hardly any recourse. Anyone who the government believes MIGHT have a claim on another nationality can be denationalised.
