I'm fascinated by puzzles in Strange Antiquities by @badvikinggames.bsky.social , so I thought I'd break it down. The gameplay is basically: someone asks you for an object and you need to find it from a cryptic description. It's quite specific: you mustn't just grab something that looks right.

I adored Enys Men, although I love things that are a bit surreal. If you listen to the improvised game Scott and I did with @symphonyhorror.bsky.social , you can hear Enys Men lurking in the background.

It's a quiet morning, so I just wanted to mention how much I'm enjoying Strange Antiquities. It's a slow puzzle game you can dip into; it's pleasingly hard but logical; and there's a slow-building horror to it. It's also one of the few games where I deliberately make the evil choices.

Thinking about puzzle difficulty: I like easy puzzles in games. I'm someone who is delighted to find a red door and later find a red key to open it.

I went to the Lee Miller exhibition at Tate Britain today, which was pretty mind-blowing honestly. Go if you can.

One slight difficulty I have is that, even when we try to remember "forgotten" games and cultures, we often talk mainly about the United States. I'm personally keen to remember the Collective Endeavour (Scotland and UK) as well as The Forge. And there'll be other movements in other countries too.

I've just written this horrible sentence: "Human terraforming is a growth area for Extracsa, which has both medical and cosmetic applications". Yes, I'm proud of myself.

This is how I play Strange Antiquities in short bursts: pick up a few things. Weigh them. Inspect them. Look them up in books. Read the books for a while. Forget what I was trying to do. Start again. I love it. Maybe I'm deliberately playing slowly to prolong the game.

A thing I love about Mothership's game design: when you fail, you gain Stress. But Stress doesn't make you less likely to succeed at rolls. So you don't get the annoying "failure spiral" you get in many other games. It makes you more likely to Panic, which is fun!

One of the best things about indie games was bringing players into the narrative. But...I feel this spilled over into a weird ambivalence towards the GM role. I like the GM role; I like facilitation; I like prep; I like starting a story for others to finish; and I feel indie games missed that a bit

Three things I can talk about for 3 hours with no prep: 1. The evidence behind creativity (it's complex). 2. The history of the welfare state. 3. Writing horror games of course.
