Federal funding to Harvard is primarily for basic research labs, a government-university partnership that has been US policy for 80 years since the end of WWII. International undergraduate student tuition is not federally funded. Anyone trying to confuse these two things is trying to play you.

So: In 2017, Congress made this happen: NIH: Proposed 22% cut --> 9% increase NSF: Proposed 11% cut --> 4% increase NOAA: Proposed 16% cut --> 4% increase Obviously, 2025 is not 2017. A lot is diff now. But still: 💰 Congress, not WH, sets budgets. 📞 Public support & calls to Congress matter.

I heard rumors starting yesterday that this same stunt was at least being contemplated with PubMed! This would be very harmful to researchers, but also to patients and the public as they rely of PubMed for access to health information. Doctors also depend on PubMed, often in real time.

A postdoc in my lab with a MOSAIC K99 was notified today that the program was terminated, no new funds to be awarded after this year. To revoke the pathway to independence award is so demoralizing for an early career researcher. I thought this might be coming but it still sucks.

This leads to the very troubling question. Did the acting NIH director approve this to be sent out? (Bad) or Was this sent out without his knowledge or against his recommendation? (Worse) /fin

Folks, let’s not be too quick to blame. HHMI is a progressive institution with strong leadership, doing what it can while navigating legal challenges. They get top legal advice on what’s possible, and these are tough times. Let’s not demonize one of the good ones!
