I've been meaning to teach myself how to use these short form video editing tools, develop a little booty dance so I can explain/promote chemical engineering via vertical video. in my perspective, gained from 21 yrs research experience incl 4 contiguous years in undergrad and mentoring about 2 dozen undergrads since then, the absolute most important thing an undergrad can do to prepare for a career in science/engr is to learn the fundamentals—the stuff taught—really well

A strange false dichotomy between research and foundational coursework

To @chemjobber.bsky.social's point here (bsky.app/profile/chem...) We encourage our first-year students to join a lab. (I've had 1st-week students join my lab). Students get safety training, PPE, mentorship, and an intentional on-ramp, built by expertise <ahem>, for doing research.

Thank you. I was thinking this earlier. We already have this. It's great! It doesn't need to be reinvented! Undergrads join an established research project and their piece of the project is limited in scope, but it is absolutely a real research contribution.

a lot in this bit to be disappointed, but like, in the best of times, *this IS the academy* i.e. undergraduate research at most colleges allows students access to basic research quickly? it's solely resource limited? I guess Dr. Robbins didn't talk to many of her Utah chemistry colleagues...

Anecdatally, we’ve already seen a BIG uptick in growers doing… unconventional… things for the first time and asking us for advice on how it will affect our products’ performance. Like pre-planting anhydrous NH3 (instead of fall), swapping fertilizers/timings/application methods, etc.
