It’s really important that #Vancouver’s Downtown Business Association, who were originally against bike-lanes, are now among their most vigourous supporters, because of ACTUAL EVIDENCE that they’re better for downtown business than any street parking they replaced. Safe bike-lanes mean business.

My walk from the subway stop goes through a few stop signs and it is incredibly rare to see a car stop.

The problem with PBOT and the city's approach in general to East Portland roads, isn't a lack of attention or investment. It's that the projects they do build are way too compromised (bcuz politics), too sympathetic to drivers, and are lacking in physical protection for bikers/walkers.

In New York City they put the bike lanes on the left side of the road because you want the fastest vehicles to stay to the left.

If every single bicycle in the world disappeared cars would be just as slow as they are today. If every single car in the world disappeared bikes would be multiple magnitudes faster than they are today. A 40 minute urban bike ride would go down to 20 minutes.

So we moved to Brooklyn this weekend. Went on my first bike ride longer than going around the block today & it was pretty incredible. Perfect, absolutely not. There's way too many cars in general & parked in bike lanes but overall I saw tons of bikes, felt like I was in a bike city & loved it.

If Boston simply stopped trying to appease cars, an incredibly selfish and inefficient mode of transport, it could transform itself into one of the world's greatest cities. The bones are there, it's an amazing walking city, biking is already the fastest way to get around but the T needs expansion.

I did some field research awhile back to see how the Dutch do bike lanes in industrial areas and—folks—they're better than the shit we have in the city.

People think Portland, Oregon is a progressive place that is bike friendly BUT WE TAX BIKES. Sorry for yelling but it's absolutely insane, counter-productive, regressive, anti-bike, anti-climate and hasn't stopped the '“bikes don’t pay their fare share.”' cries. We need to get rid of the bike tax.

The best feature of streets designed like this is that they slow down big vehicles but don't slow down people on foot and bike. We should stop installing speed bumps and speed humps and instead just add concrete planters to make slow liveable walkable streets.

Yes, this is the best way to bike protest. Every Critical Mass should be on a Monday morning during rush hour with every cyclist taking the whole lane, leaving plenty of space before the next vehicle and diligently following every law (no corking). The resulting traffic jam would show what happens.

Joke is you can carry a ton of groceries on a bike that's not even equipped with any racks or baskets. Back in the day used to fill a backpack, put a bag on each handlebar and use a ulock to carry another bag or two. Probably a week's worth of groceries on a single speed no problem.

It'll forever bother me that on a Saturday at 11:15AM it takes 18 minutes to bike down Dot Ave, the exact same amount of time it takes to drive the same exact 3.5 miles. What's incredibly frustrating though is that getting rid of cars would make that trip even faster for people biking! Sigh.

When you spend magnitudes less on transportation you have a lot more money to spend at local businesses! Also helps that you can see the businesses and easily stop at them when on a bike.

Have long thought the most effective way to protest to support separated protected bike infrastructure is to have a bunch of cyclists ride, single file, in the middle of the lane during rush hour. The resulting traffic jam would make international news and show how absurd the status quo is.

Neighborhood greenways are anti-bike infrastructure & only serve to move cyclists off main roads & onto residential roads leaving the main roads, which people still need to bike on to get to their destination, dangerous. Greenways are a waste of resources & align with Portland's decrease in biking.
