Another lesson in real world jawboning. DOJ pressures one company (Apple) into compliance. The next company (Google) also complies with no direct DOJ contact at all. The company whose Maps app tells me where the highway patrol is (thx!) won't let scared and vulnerable people share ICE location.

There's a section of Young's memo (131ff) where he describes the "frictionless" review process to find people to punish. He notes there could be more in the secret meetings, but USG refused to share details of those. Then says, I don't want to assume you're incompetent, so this must be the intent.

John Roberts was part of the 3-judge panel presiding over Hamdan v. Rumsfeld while actively interviewing for a seat on the Supreme Court. He didn't recuse himself, didn't inform Hamdan's lawyers, and ruled in the Bush admin's favor the day before he interviewed with Bush himself.
