Hi friends. I'm finally home from the hospital. I developed respiratory acidosis from acute-on-chronic respiratory failure related to aspiration pneumonia & too much sedation from meds. I need to start using mechanical ventilation (supplemental O2 isn't enough anymore). But I'm home & otherwise ok.💖

I know I keep harping on the "illegal =/= impossible" distinction but the fact that SO MANY PEOPLE continue to believe it is a huge reason why we're here.

Please let today be the day that I'm discharged. Please. PUHLEASE.

Was hoping to go home today, then my blood gas levels started trending in a weird direction and my back incision leaked everywhere multiple times and also I may or may not have a cerebral spinal fluid leak??? so I'm being held another night till we figure shit out. Sigh.

Been a really rough day. ICU team will be monitoring me for 24 hrs to see if I have any more issues after my usual Apixaban anticoagulant. I have a new buildup of fluid around basically my whole spine and partially collapsed parts of both lungs but no new emboli, hemorrhage or brain abnormalities.

I deserve a treat for surviving this three times.

Good news!! After two post surgical blood transfusions, my hemoglobin is back up to a mostly normal range even as I continue with my anticoagulant treatment!!

The goal has been met! Thank you to everyone who made this happen, whether by circulating, chipping in or sharing words of support.💕 I go in for surgery tomorrow at 6am & it's a huge relief to not have to immediately worry about out of pocket medical expenses when I wake up. Like oh I'm sorry, you as a dr/nurse don't want to mask for your cancer & respiratory failure patients because it gives you pimples? Cry me a fucking river. I'm worried about hospital acquired infections during my post surgical intubation bc no one masks but god forbid YOU be inconvenienced.

How you treat: -food service workers -people who are homeless -poor, disabled people -people who use drugs -kids -and animals tells me all I need to know about you.

I used to enjoy drawing hyper realistic pictures with a mechanical pencil & paper but I haven't been able to do that since my dominant arm/hand became paralyzed. Partner got me a drawing tablet & while I still have to take frequent breaks bc nerve pain + arthritis, I finally can draw again.

I have chronic respiratory failure + a blood clotting disorder & none of my drs mask. Truly, fuck them.

Will find out definitively on Tuesday if I'll be intubated for a while after my revision spinal fusion next week on Thursday. It depends on how shitty my latest pulmonary function test was (yay, neuromuscular chronic respiratory failure). Cross your fingers for me that the results aren't too bad.

If I could give a younger version of myself advice, it would be to take more photos. With friends, with pets, of anything that brought me joy. That way down the line when PTSD & shitty memories crowd out the good ones, I have something tangible to remind myself it wasn't all bad. It really wasn't.

We're poor and disabled in the sub-Arctic, and winter is knocking at the door. Not even asking for help with the roof, that's tens of thousands of dollars no one can afford, just if you could help us get some food, maybe a tarp that we can screw down for the foreseeable future.
