I’ve expanded my note a bit here with some more info on what SCOTUS did today regarding the Fed and Trump’s thus-far-unsuccessful attempt to fire Lisa Cook. tl;dr: SCOTUS changed nothing, but, in reality, that is doing something.

That's the theory, anyway. In reality, the military are more likely to react with discipline and restraint than far too many American police forces.

I hope it's clear to everyone now that Trump really is going for it - he's trying to become a dictator. I don't know if he'll succeed, but he's working to install himself as an autocrat unaccountable to voters. And he's weaponizing the military against Americans who oppose him as part of that effort

Trump just called us "the enemy within" Those are LITERALLY the words Adolf Hitler used to describe Jews in Nazi Germany. Literally the same words.

The thing is that the military genuinely would have had no problem staying segregated, all-white, or all-male if not for that pesky little problem where they didn't have enough people when they did that and it turns out it costs less and works better when you just integrate units.

Trump wraps up a speech to military leaders that represented a major escalation of his effort to weaponize the armed forces into a tool he can use to violently quash domestic dissent. Hard to imagine how anyone with a shred of dignity can keep serving after this, which of course is the point.

What Ezra Klein&co. don't understand is that civil debate requires a foundational respect for the humanity of others participating in it. The conservative political project is one driven by a desire to exclude people from the boundaries of humanity and the public.

To add another series on to Mike’s excellent suggestion, I can not recommend the Bartimaeus series enough. Surface level similarities to shall-not be-named, but very different vibes, much better world building, and the main character certainly *believes* himself to be one of the good guys.

Also, the areas where Aaronovitch has grown the most as an author have been less in areas like "improved wordplay," and more in areas like "OK, so official British wizardry in the 17th to mid-20th centuries was run by, effectively, a boys club, but that can't mean there weren't women using magic."
