Oh thank Christ, I thought that was Capaldi. I hope the Paddington as Grim Reaper thing endures. Centuries from now, he'll be a being of folklore, they'll think the kids' stories came after. Bonus points if he outlives Christianity, so people think he's guardian of the afterlife. The Peru-y Gates.

I am not sorry. This is simply true. Academics should be able to write fluently and express themselves clearly and academics should do their own work. Itās literally our job. Itās what we trained until 22nd grade to do. This is a simple observation that should require no explanation or defense.

I thought of writing an SF story set so far in the future that it had lost the knowledge of this - by common acclaim the greatest live performance there has been or will ever be. And then I realised that's literally just the plot of the musical We Will Rock You.

I think a good analogy here is movie budgets. As budgets go up movies can become less interesting or distinct. A pincer movement, I think, of creators terrified they're on the hook to lose a lot of someone else's money, and the ease of just being able to make your first idea.

this book is amazing. it has so much forgotten/misplaced history that ACTUALLY HAPPENED. studying modernism left me with a bunch of facts that stack-up like loose bricks; this book--and the history it tells--is the mortar, transforming everything else into a coherent whole. and its so well written!
