Congratulations to Illinois, which today became the 13th state to sign clean slate legislation into law. Clean slate laws allow people with criminal convictions in their past to more easily obtain housing, employment, and more by sealing some criminal records after a certain amount of time.

Some of the stories in here are absolutely chilling. One US citizen of Somali descent was just riding an elevator with ICE agents and then they detained him for almost half an hour in the freezing cold despite him showing agents his passport card. They only let him go once protestors showed up.

When cops kill, police agencies often mislead, exonerate too quickly, smear the deceased, use the exonerative tense, etc. But there's at least usually some solemnity -- acknowledgement that the loss of life is regrettable. It's the absolute glee in these responses that I can't shake.

I would say even for those of us who spend a lot of time reading police shooting cases from the courts of appeals and watching the related videos - and that is a shocking and dismaying experience, I promise you - that one is pretty shocking.

This is a strange way of saying “we’re complying with court orders now that we failed to get #SCOTUS to stay them.”

This is critically important. Democrats need to pass it if they retake Congress. Trump will veto it. So pass it again. Campaign on it. Given current polling, corruption of the FBI, and the brutality of ICE and BP, there’s no better time to say, “Federal police are not above the law.”

Chicago debuted a program this year that lets police file felony gun charges without getting a prosecutor’s approval. Two of the police officers who have overseen many cases under this program have 59 misconduct complaints between them.
