I just finished Cixin Liu’s Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy where he explains his Dark Forest Theory! I have reservations about some heavy handed ideological commentary in the series’, but it’s great sci-fi!

What Calvin is noting here is called “The Dark Forest Hypothesis” … it’s a hypothetical answer to the Fermi Paradox. It speculates that all advanced civilizations learn to be silent *or* are destroyed by an extremely dangerous predator … and we are basically screaming in this dark deadly forest.
