A recent scientific paper compared excess death rates among countries, using the pre-pandemic period 2015-2019 as a baseline. A few years ago I integrated the same dataset they used (STMF from HMD) and built my own excess death analysis. I was reassured to see quite similar results. 🧵

Here's the latest variant picture for New Zealand, to late January. In a chaotic scene, NB.1.8.1 "Nimbus", JN.1.* +DeFLuQE (led by PE.1.4) and XFG.* "Stratus" are all significant. BA.3.2.* "Cicada" is also present, but at only 11%.

Which is what I’ve been saying. It was a deeply inequitable decision for rich countries with strong health systems and lower HIV/malaria/malnutrition rates to decide to keep a pet SARS virus. Frankly, it’s just another form of oppression.

As you can see XFG is getting big in New York, while NB.1.8.1 does the same in California. Ontario/Canada has a decent amount of both. In Europe XFG is big in Catalunya/Spain, while NB.1.8.1 is a bit bigger in France then XFG. We'll now more in a few weeks! 2/2

I have made an overview of the battle between XFG and NB.1.8.1 in the world Samples collected on/after the 12th of May NB.1.8.1 with a very high percentage in some SouthEast-Asian countries, and big in Oceania as well XFG big in India/Pakistan/Bangladesh Mixed in North America and Europe 1/2
