BA.3.2 has arrived in the UK. One BA.3.2.2, collected October 5, was uploaded from Scotland today. Same branch as recent BA.3.2.2 from Germany & Slovenia. It has a few errors (S:ins214:ASDT is misread & ORF1a:E4388K is an artifact). Ignoring those, the one notable new mutation is N:N126K.

Closing these public analyses puts the world more in the dark and concretely harms surveillance as it becomes more difficult for variant spotters to contribute to global situational awareness. 4/5

On Oct 1, 2025, GISAID informed us that they had ended updates to the flat file of SARS-CoV-2 genomic sequences and associated metadata that we had used to update Nextstrain analyses since Feb 2020. GISAID's stated rationale was that their "resources are limited". 1/5

EU-landen mogen vanaf nu carbon credits gebruiken om hun klimaatdoelen te halen. Dat besloot de EU vandaag na lange onderhandelingen. Met die credits kunnen landen laten zien dat ergens anders ter wereld CO₂ uit de lucht is gehaald. Maar de klimaatimpact daarvan wordt grof overschat.

Slovenia just uploaded a BA.3.2.2 to GISAID. It is most closely linked to the 2 German BA.3.2.2 from April and september and (a bit more distant) to a South African one from September.

GISAID is now blocking genomic sequencing access to critical resources like Nextstrain, Covspectrum, Outbreak-info, & others. This makes us less safe, as live tracking of viral evolution remains critical for assessment of emerging threats. This needs to be escalated.

And now NextStrain as well. Next up, will GISAID start charging open-source community tools to have access? That would completely shaft users who contributed to GISAID, where we never agreed to that and assumed GISAID would be good custodians of the data we contributed. They're not.

In Nederland lijkt de recombinant XGA opkomend. Het zijn er nog niet heel veel, maar hij is al wel in 6 provincies gevonden. Hij komt tot nog toe voornamelijk in West-Europa voor, zoals in België, Frankrijk en Spanje.

After 3 months, South Africa has uploaded another BA.3.2.2. It has 3 mutations in common with the Australian samples, which we haven't seen outside of Australia before. T1195C, C2592T and T6856C. So, it probably migrated after it gained those. It gained some extra mutations after that.

New South Wales has uploaded their samples to GISAID. They have also found a BA.3.2 for the first time! Several were found before in Western Australia.

They have started to put PE.1.4, a KP.3.1 sublineage, on the map in New South Wales/Australia. We have seen it grow in Queensland and New Zealand as well, but it has hardly been seen outside of Oceania. Will it stay there mostly, like XBC eg. did, or will it conquer the world?

Na beter lezen op de infectieradar website zie ik dat we alleen een record hebben voor na 1 oktober 2024. Daarvoor was de meetmethode anders (en slechter). Je ziet ook een stijging per 1 oktober!

We hebben een nieuw record... 25,41% van de mensen met klachten die getest zijn bij de infectieradar vorige week, is positief getest op SARS-CoV-2. Het vorige record (23,39%) stamt uit oktober 2024. Er is gemeten sinds eind 2022. Let op, er hebben NIET een record aantal mensen klachten/Corona!

Inmiddels zijn er voor de meest recente weken alleen nog maar samples met een XFG of NB.1.8.1 Spike gevonden. 4 samples heten nu nog XFG in Nextclade, maar binnenkort niet meer. Dit betreft nieuwe recombinanten met een XFG Spike. 1/2
