I've been rereading the Grant Morrison run on JLA. In the first issue he name drops The Beatles, and that feels accurate. The Authority, and then The Ultimates are responses to Morrison's JLA, which doesn't mean they aren't great themselves, but this supercharged the superhero team comic.

The setting of the sequel trilogy is actually fascinating when you take away the nostalgia baggage of Star Wars. A new dark age, where everyone has been ground down by two civil wars, the heroes of the last war won the battle but we're unprepared for peace. All for one person's vanity.
