And the problem is it cuts against BOTH standard arguments now because, ok, "TNG didn't just do reverent Trek Nostalgia! It was brand new so Disco/Academy should be too!" Yea... but it could do that in part BECAUSE there was a WHOLE MOVIE SERIES doing the reverent nostalgia stuff...

The pop-memory hasn't really preserved that (movie) series the same way it has other big 80s/90s stuff, so now the 'Star Trek story' is exclusively about Millennials watching TNG/VOY/DS9 in the 90s, but that's literally the "undercard" of it's own whole period.

Like I know that complicates the arguments on every level of this vis-a-vis nostalgia vs newness; but it's the fact of it: TNG was doing its whole run "in the shadow" of 'STAR TREK' in the pop-culture identity largely being a HUGE blockbuster movie franchise still mainly lead by Shatner and Co. 🤷‍♂️

I'm Mr. "Everything Except Lower Decks Is Just Kinda Agressively Okay" when it comes to modern 'STAR TREK;' but it feels notable that both ends of the good/bad old vs new argument basically ignore that TNG *wasn't* really the "backbone" of the franchise when it was airing. The TOS *MOVIES* were.
