One idea that has really helped me in life is “miswanting”—when you go after something thinking it’ll make you happy, and then… it doesn’t. I often try to pause and ask, “Why do I want this? Do I actually want it, or just think I should?” It’s still a struggle, but the pause really helps.

Two things can be true at the same time: You can genuinely love someone, be so emotionally entangled with them that you want to be with them and make them happy, and also hate the things they want you to do for them. Once you get caught up it can be difficult to let go.
