For all we know this might’ve been an automated post, but this is a good example of the (many) limitations of distraction rhetoric.

The Trump paradox is that he speaks the unspeakable, yet his constant mendacity and bluffing also rob those transgressions of their meaning. He has put a threat of genocide in the air, made it a “policy option” and a “bargaining chip.” And yet the whole thing could be a deceptive tactic.

As a business decision, I don’t think this will work. But I think this helps illustrate the right’s (ruthless & anti-democratic) grasp of political power. Compared to the “woke” era, it is far more consequential to control institutions & the material base of culture than rely on social pressure.

The West has funded genocide in Gaza and silenced those who spoke against it. Now the most powerful person in the West floats a new genocide.

The United States has just bombed Sharif University in Tehran, the most prestigious university in Iran and among the top one hundred in the world in civil engineering. Ironically, it has been a hotbed of student opposition to the Iranian regime.

What gets me is that this is a genuinely funny pitch. Applying rationalist, journalistic detective work to a claim like this is *funny.* The problem is that the NYT’s studied credulity & refusal to assert the fundamental impossibility of his claim means that *it’s not in on the joke* — so it flops.

Some notes on AOC’s change on military aid to Israel — and why I think it’s more about the center than the left. AOC spent years with an awkward position on military aid to Israel: she opposed aid for offensive capabilities, but supported aid for its missile defense. Now she opposes *all aid*.

In the classroom especially, I think part of my job for students right now is to resist entirely because so many other parts of the institution have been sucked into the current. But there's a lot of public value, I think, in examples of institutions like this that tried and then said no thanks.
