the coasts thing is really the point - Dalian-Harbin is about as far as Raleigh-NYC, and Raleigh-NYC includes WAY more important cities than Dalian-Harbin does, but we don't have anything remotely resembling a viable regular rail route, much less a HSR one, from Raleigh-NYC.

The real objection that is hard to get around is the lack of options for transit once one gets OFF a train in most major US cities. Airports have developed elaborate rental car architecture and re designing our dinky rail stations to do that is even more daunting and dense than the lines themselves.
