Some of the best discoveries are fortuitous. Chemists modified an antibiotic (vancomycin) targeting gram-positive bacteria to make it more effective against resistant strains. In doing so they unexpectedly made a form of vancomycin that also kills gram-negative bacteria

Beautiful day for a hike along the Appalachian Trail in VA. The views looking west were beautiful, but the nearby trees stole the show.

Went for a hike this afternoon to see the Potomac River, and it did not disappoint. A mushroom I spotted along the way was doing its best impression of a carnation.

I'm repeating this as dogwoods are more broadly in flower. On the left with white bracts (not petals) is a flowering dogwood inflorescence, containing many flowers. The closeup shows the individual flowers. We can learn a lot just by looking at nature carefully.

This is a fascinating thread, and yet the era of box beds wasn’t exactly ancient history. Can’t help but wonder what other customs have been lost to time.

What can you learn about an owl from their piercing eyes? There /seems/ to be a correlation between iris eye color & activity cycle. Owls with YELLOW eyes are more likely to be 'diurnal': day-hunters, as with this Northern hawk-owl (Surnia ulula) which hunts, like a hawk, in the daytime.

During World War 1, fighting temporarily ceased in the trenches for Christmas and some German troops put up a sign meaning God with us – GOTT MIT UNS. The British troops then crawled across no-man’s land and wrote their own message on the German sign – WE GOT MITTENS TOO

Complex, interesting oil paintings are hanging in my studio unfinished. They are unique; my own style. My favorite way to blend science + art. I love them and will get back to them eventually. But right now I’m captivated by painting planets on little pieces of clay. 🐡🔭🧪

The other day I was busy working at my desk but I kept hearing the neighbors’ dogs barking. I finally looked outside - a Cooper’s hawk was calmly sitting on a fence post, knowing full well that the dogs could see him but not reach him. If it’s possible to troll dogs, this bird was doing it
