RIP Joseph Byrd. In addition to the great United States of America album, my personal favorite work of his was the severely misunderstood and underappreciated avant-garde arrangement for Phil Ochs' masterwork The Crucifixion

RIP, Joe Byrd, mastermind behind two mind-bending classics: The United States Of America (1968) + Joe Byrd And The Field Hippies' The American Metaphysical Circus (1969). Get 'em both in all formats. He was true one-off, loved by Broadcast, Portishead, & many others.

Somehow I don't think I've ever seen Roger Ebert's 1968 review of Night of the Living Dead before. Incredible to think of a bunch of children a expecting a goofy b-movie and instead being exposed to real modern horror

NOTE (2004): This reaction to a screening of "Night of the Living Dead" is not, properly speaking, a review -- or rather, it is a review of the audience

People who are making really powerful technology where there's no guarantees about who the owner will be 5 years from now really should make an effort to build Death Star exhaust ports into it imo

I think any story about Trump's autocracy should be mostly about the people and institutions who failed to stop it. This guy isn't a political genius, everything else just happens to be rotten. 'Toddler Consolidates Power In Household' is a story about incompetent parents, not shrewd maneuvering

If you’re a coffee person worried about tarriffs I highly, highly recommend getting into home roasting. For a fairly small investment of like $250 you can buy a small air roaster and then bulk green coffee costs like 25% of comparable roasted fancy coffee.

It is really annoying that the AI hype is so fucking stupid because honestly the technologies are really impressive and amazing even if they don’t actually do all that much useful stuff. Been playing around with Sora and it is actually incredible what it can produce.

Once in Korea we went to a bar whose thing was music videos on big screens all around the room. They put on “Untitled (How Does It Feel” and the room fell dead silent. A lot of patrons were seeing it for the first time. When it ended a dude in this group of men said quietly, “he must work out” RIP

Really do not understand how we seem to have lost the technology that allowed us to put more than 20 of music per side on an LP. Man I have plenty of old 50+ minute LPs that sound fine, what the fuck happened? 41 minutes of music? Oh that’s gotta be a double LP set

Bought the complete Percewood's Onagram CD set on a whim and what an odd band, early psych-prog (german band but not very Krautrocky) played so amateurishly it's actually quite charming. Closest thing I can think of is more pretentious early Mott the Hoople with much worse songwriting

If only the movie Mountainhead (2025) had been any good it would have been unbelievably timely. Tip to filmmakers: If you're going to make a ripped-from-the-headlines movie it's better to make it trashy than boring
