By learning from other countries and adopting international best practices, California High Speed Rail was able to cut its costs by $14 billion and cut 70% of tunnels. This is a big lesson for transit projects both in NY & around the US: start by learning from other countries.

The thing about Mamdani is that he’s a talented politician but not otherworldly or one in a billion, he’s just a competent guy with popular ideas who ran against an entitled piece of shit and to me it’s a lot more optimistic to imagine 1000 campaigns like his than to view him as a unique phenomenon

I am not a crazy ideologue. I just think that the richest society in human history has a moral responsibility to welcome the stranger, feed the hungry, treat the sick, and house the homeless. If doing that requires forcing comfortably-housed people to accept neighborhood change, I'm ok with that.

Our new piece on the importance of transit connectivity in Boston

The Red-Blue Connector: A half-mile of subway that benefits an entire region - CommonWealth Beacon
It’s easy to look at the short length of the proposed Red-Blue Connector – less than half a mile – and mistake it for a project with small impact. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Thanks to the Illinois’ massive investment in transit, Chicago has a bright transit future, with the dawn coming next year: —50% increase in every-10-min bus routes to 30 citywide —8-minute midday headways on rail lines —24-hour Orange Line service (Red & Blue already have it)

Forget hydrogen or batteries. Just electrify trains like the rest of the world, with simple overhead line that allows efficient engines to pull power direct from source. Congrats to

Utah's UTA is state-managed, funded by 5-year investment frameworks, and uses service-led planning. It's no wonder FrontRunner has plans for electrification while Metrolink and LOSSAN are still avoiding the issue, despite serving more people.

I bet rezonings along the IBX will be among the first times that the Affordable Housing Appeals Board comes into play (implicitly if not explicitly.) Queens and Brooklyn have pro-housing Borough Presidents for the next 4 years but their successors may not be - we must strike while the iron is hot.

In a welcome move, NYC is planning to invest $40M over the next ten years, seeking to build seats at 875 bus stops every year. Seating is a vital part of transit that not only makes it more accessible, but improves usability by reducing perceived waiting time.

Unfortunately, however, some of this investment will be in the form of "leaning bars," not seats. Leaning bars are in no way a replacement for a bench. Everyone deserves a place to sit while waiting for the bus—and some people, particularly those with mobility issues, need one.

ETA recommends that this be combined with bus stop consolidation. Compared to best practices around the world, NYC's bus stops are far too close together. Consolidation would allow for faster, more frequent service while also allowing for more stops to have seats and shelters.

We also recommend other stop improvements, such as bus bulbs, which not only reduce delays from merging into traffic, but create more space for seating and shelters. With small tweaks like these, this promising investment would massively improve the experience of NY bus riders.

No competent person wants to work for Andrew Cuomo because he has a track record of pushing out competent people. It should tell you something that many of the most competent public servants to ever work in city government are practically beating down the door to work in a Mamdani administration.

Every single report to shareholders from a large REIT includes something about how it's great that market-rate multifamily housing isn't getting built in high-cost coastal cities because the shortage is what allows them to rent gouge.
