As someone who has been peacefully protesting at Broadview every Friday for weeks, I cannot in good conscience fail to name these additional risks publicly or advise others to go. ICE is escalating and confrontational protest right now will likely make conditions worse for everyone except ICE. 4/6

ICE sealed off Beach Street with an unlawful fence which forces protesters to be at a driveway that is ripe for kettling. Yesterday, they shot pepper balls, flash bangs, tear gas, and rubber bullets at 9 AM. It will almost certainly be worse tonight. And used as an excuse for ICE overreach. 3/6

ICE just chased everyone off the public road by the Broadview facility. They yelled for people to move and immediately began firing gas into the crowd, which included legal observers, press, and medics.

War ravaged Portland

By observing and recording peacefully, we can ensure that any violations of the law are brought to light and those responsible are held accountable.

I urge members of the public to remain calm, stay safe, and document what you see with your phones and cameras. My senior team has also asked legal organizations to support monitoring on the ground.

Illinois will always defend Americans’ right to peacefully protest and make their voices heard. We denounce any violence against the general public, members of the media, and law enforcement or first responders. Even when the Trump Administration does not follow the law, we will.

The suggestion that chemical agents like tear gas or pepper spray could be used indiscriminately against peaceful demonstrators, or even first responders, is unacceptable and not normal.

Whether it be in Broadview here in Illinois or in Portland, Oregon, the Trump Administration is intentionally creating chaos to threaten sending military troops to American cities and suburbs.

The State of Illinois is closely monitoring the federal deployments in the Village of Broadview. Public safety is always my top priority, and the Illinois State Police remains in close communication with the Broadview Police Department to monitor and maintain public safety.

Just FYI: Portland as a war zone is horseshit, and deploying federal troops is horseshit.

There will be violence in Portland, no matter how peaceful regular Portlanders are. They will either be people ginned up by malign actors on social media (mostly from hostile nations like Russia) or malign actors themselves. This is what makes this both so predictable and so heartbreaking.

As a former federal prosecutor who worked for DOJ for 25 years, I concur. This is a red line moment of political abuse that cements the United States as a banana republic with better window dressing.
