#32DaysOfGraves day 22: landscape. Uig, a remote corner in the far west of the Isle of Lewis. I have a personal connection to this spot, but even if I didn't, it's not a bad place to lie and face eternity.

#31DaysOfGraves day 19: social group.Alexander Webster was a bonesetter, who died in 1759. On his tomb we see him working on a patient, watched by his wife and children (this is also their tomb). St. Cyrus Nether.

Delighted to report that this counter-protest to today's #NoKings #NoTyrants protests in Edinburgh seems to have *Counts on fingers* 3 people. Maybe 4 if the guy talking to the police next to them is included. Excellent work Scotland.

#31DaysOfGraves day17: relocated. Mary Stevenson died in 1855. One of the gravediggers had a side hustle as a grave robber but was caught red-handed trying to "relocate" her body. On her tomb we see the image of a graverobber with Mary(?) lying on the ground. More here: share.google/K9KL3AGTKGhL...

#31DaysOfGraves Day 15: Damaged Sadly, many of the gravestones in #RutherglenCemetery are damaged, mostly due to neglect. Some have been in bits for decades, but the Plunkett gravestone fell and cracked in two some time during 2023/4. Please take care in cemeteries, especially near larger stones.

#31DaysOfGraves day15: damaged. A coastal location and soft sandstone have conspired to erase everything about who lies here. But in a rather beautiful way. I hope their memory is preserved somewhere, in the parish records or just in people's minds. St Aiden's Church, Bamburgh, Northumberland.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 14 Inside: A Viking -age grave marker inside Govan Old Parish Church. It was fashionable in the 17th and 18th centuries to reuse the stones, hence the initials and date added later. Free entry to the Govan Stones every day until the end of Oct. @govanstones.bsky.social

#31DaysOfGraves day14: inside. Govan, better known as the heart of Scotland's shipbuilding industry, is home to one of the country's oldest places of worship and to the Govan Stones, Viking era hogback stones, as well as the magnificent pre-Norman Govan sarcophagus. A brilliant place to visit.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 12: Notable woman From a visit to Llanaber Church, Barmouth, Wales in the summer, the grave of Fanny Talbot (1824-1917). A friend of John Ruskin and a generous philanthropist, she is noted for gifting the first property, Dinas Oleu, to the newly formed National Trust in 1895.

Since it's Sunday, one more for #31DaysOfGraves, notable women - a picture of Haworth Churchyard, resting place of Charlotte and Emily Brontë. It's a beautiful spot, but the photo gives an idea of how crowded it is - apparently somewhere in the region of 40,000 souls lie here, in quite a small plot

#31DaysOfGraves day 12: notable women. The tomb of Grace Darling at St Aiden's Church, Bamburgh. Grace was the daughter of the lighthouse keeper on the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast and in 1838 took part in a rescue during a storm that brought her national fame.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 10: Urn Urns seem to have been a popular choice as grave monuments during the earlier phase of #RutherglenCemetery (late Victorian). They're vulnerable to the ravages of neglect and vandalism, but those that remain in place are very photogenic.

For #31DaysOfGraves, day 11: military, my favourite stone in all of Scotland. I'm not sure if it's really a grave, so much as a memorial, thought to be depicting a battle between the Picts and the Northumbrians under King Ecgfrith, way back in 685AD. The wonderful Aberlemno Cross.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

#31DaysOfGraves day 8: Glass. Martyrs' Monument, Stirling. Margaret (18) and Agnes (13) Wilson were sentenced to death in 1685 for their religious beliefs. Agnes was reprieved, but Margaret, and Margaret McLauchlan, in her late 60s, were drowned at the stake in the rising tide of the Solway Firth

Such a worthwhile cause - do donate a few pounds if you can (and visit if you're here in Glasgow). The Govan Stones project is at the heart of our city and the Govan community and the stones are the most amazing things.

#31DaysOfGraves day 7: angel. One of my favourite stones from one of my favourite graveyards, the remote and lovely St Cyrus Nether, which sits on the beach at the bottom of cliffs, far below the village. The stone memorialises the family of John Well(?), a weaver, and dates back to the 1750s.

The fact they jumped straight to AI actors modeled after women when, if I’m not mistaken, male actors are a higher labor cost kind of says it all doesn’t it,

For #31DaysOfGraves today, I offer this very autumnal scene from the grounds of the remarkable Palladian church at Ayot St Lawrence, Herts. I think it's a pheasant (?), but it reminds me of my childhood nearby and the walk through the beechwoods to reach this strange quiet place

#StormAmy making herself felt here in the west of Scotland this evening. We've already lost a big branch from one of our ash trees and keeping an eye on the tree that leans at a 45° angle at the best of times. It came through Eowyn unscathed back in January - will Amy be too much for it?

Loving all the #31DaysOfGraves posts. Today's theme is #tomb and with the Glasgow Necropolis on my doorstep I'm kind of spoiled for choice. Some of Glasgow's Victorian high-heejuns probably spent a good deal of their alloted span deciding how they could outdo each other in death.

Late September and this ivy hedge is smothered in late pollinators. Ivy is not a spectacular flower, but an important food source at this time of year. Don't be too quick to chop back and tidy up your garden in autumn - you never know who might be looking for a meal! 🌱

Poll of over 7,000 people reveals strong support for clean energy, nature restoration, and climate action. A large majority made up of people who think they are in a small minority, thanks to relentless misinformation online and in the mainstream media.

Sky News says police are "overwhelmed by the numbers". Met coped perfectly well with 2x as many at the pro-Gaza rally, 5x as many at the anti-Brexit march, and 15x as many at London Pride. They're not overwhelmed by the numbers. They're overwhelmed by the ratio of violent thugs in those numbers.

Removing racist displays in one city = the cost of 12,000 hours of social care.

Signed this petition, but it's disappointing that the LDs allow the petition to be shared on X, which is a huge part of the problem, but not here on Bluesky.
