My young body was trained to walk through snow drifts in winter and survive a soaking in summer. Nobody mentions the hot summer of 1974 that I remember because 1976 happened. We used to try and avoid disasters but now the risks are ignored. Schools taught global warming warming then, now we feel it.

We still haven't learnt from Covid. Schools should be a safe place for children (and staff!). A school should be warm enough well outside is cold, cool enough when outside is hot, and the air should be free of pathogens and allergens using filters. We can do it and we must do it.

The UK summer of 1976 was an extraordinary heatwave for its time. On the 50th anniversary, we look back to learn about what that event can tell us today. For those who experienced the heatwave it is engrained in the memory, but it gives us a stark warning about future extreme heat for the UK.
