Yesterday I did a Y9/10 show about game theory. I talked about penalty-taking and how strikers should aim straight more often. Last night 22 penalties were taken in the #WorldCup. Only 12 of them were scored, 4 saved, 6 missed the target! Not one was aimed straight. robeastaway.com/blog/penalty...

In #ALevelMaths #MathsToday (yesterday actually) we started with this lovely activity that someone shared at the maths conference last year. We went on to look at geometric and matrix proofs of the addition formulae.

The calendar effect always intrigues me. The lottery of birth month has such a huge impact. Born in August, rather than September? Likely to do significantly worse because of how our school system works.

At #mathsconf37 @mathsjem.bsky.social did a ‘fun with factorising’ session and taught us this fun way of factorising. I came home and showed my year 11 son, he did the second one and liked the new (well, very old!) method! Thanks Jo! #MathsToday

I respect teaching it "in the right order" doing CTS first, then deriving from that, but to me it just makes deriving it kind of boring. Same with when we derive the suvat formulae in mechanics. Give them formulas, use them, and when the formulas are familiar, reveal the "magic" of deriving them ✨

I would recommend this course for anyone who helps plan KS5 stuff in any way, really good course and had great conversations with others in similar positions 👍

Maybe I should start showing them this more often though. I like how the square looks like a little cog wheel that is about to turn. It would be nice to do it with other shapes for some other angles.

This is AQA GCSE Nov 2019 Paper 3 Q27. I think there are several cases where XY and PQ would be parallel, as there are basically no restrictions on where the vertices are. E.g. what if PQRS is a rectangle? Any thoughts? Is this an oversight in the question?

An activity from this morning’s A Level Pedagogy meeting. If you teach #ALevelMaths I’d be interested to know what you think of it. I’ve given it to a couple of teachers in my department and really enjoyed watching them work through it and the discussions that followed.

Last year I found training Y13 to spot patterns like (derivative)e^(function) really helped in the integration topic. This year I’m trying to embed that earlier, as we cover differentiation. #MathsToday #ALevelMaths

Was talking to Y13 about why harmonic form is useful, and it occurred to me that lots of these are the same reasons we complete the square for a quadratic. So I’m tempted to start calling this Completing The Wave #ALevelMaths #MathsToday
