In a few months, this World Bank study of "AI tutoring" will have dozens of citations and still be circulating as authoritative "policy relevant" evidence that AI improves learning. Here's a very useful assessment of why it should not be interpreted, cited, or used like that.

Got an email from Common Sense Education titled, "Making AI and Digital Literacy a Priority." Email cites Trump's EO on AI in K-12 education before touting CSE's "trusted" AI literacy curriculum. I’d add this curriculum is produced in partnership with OpenAI, which, I think, is important context!

If this isn't a cautionary warning for academics then I don't know what is. You are putting yourself one step closer to unemployment each time you use AI to write an email, synthesize literature, code any data, use the socratic method to organize ideas, or write syllabi, lectures & papers.

Honestly, even before all the AI nonsense, it always annoyed me the way everyone made it out to be such a big deal. My experience with it was that it was basically just vocabulary flashcards, and it completely ignored critical parts of learning a language, like grammar and syntax.

As a polyglot, a language teacher, a translator and a linguist: duolingo was never a good resource, and it’s about to become utterly worthless.

Once again, it is time to remind people who are using Duolingo to learn new languages to switch to alternatives that have qualified human teachers.

Last year I replaced Duolingo with actual studying, and you can too.
