In 1989, my family lived in Seoul, and one of my distinct memories is going with my dad to a certain random office building downtown where if you knew the right door to knock on, you could buy pirated video games for literal pennies.

The surge of AI slop, deceptive synthetic videos & images flooding our feeds, is driven in large part by Agentic AI Accounts (AAAs). aiforensics.org/work/agentic... Key findings: -Over 43,000 mostly AI-made posts generated 4.5 billion views -More than 65% of accounts were created in early 2025 1/

"Academics literally cannot make genAI go away" we also can't make underage drinking go away and we're not advocating for installing bar carts in every classroom.

I understand a lot of people genuinely struggle with social relationships, but unfortunately that’s the price of living in a world where good thinking is often a collaborative endeavor. You are not thinking collaboratively with an LLM because the LLM is not thinking at all.

There are a lot of folks (like me) who are looking for work and can do this job better.

there is a genre of person who hates AI in *their* field but sees how it could be useful in *other,* less prestigious, fields; ignore them. they are not trying to save the ship. they are just racing you to the lifeboats

Vajra puts the problems with AI for our industry (and artists and workers in general) in no uncertain terms. Well worth a read, particularly if you or someone you know is still on the fence when it comes to AI in the arts.

The only reasonable position is zero tolerance: the AI industry must end sooner rather than later. It is culturally, socially, environmentally, and economically destructive, and all the Silicon Valley marketing in the world isn't going to make it otherwise.

We will get paid less, many of us will be forced out of the field and/or the industry, generations of new writers will find their development stunted and their early-career opportunities limited, and ultimately, the quality of the work available to readers will suffer.

Translators, illustrators, researchers and editors all do creative, human work that is important and cannot be reproduced in part or in whole by AI any more than writers. Their interests are our interests. To legitimize the use of AI to replace them is a failure of principle as much as strategy.

There is no ethical use of AI because the continued existence of the AI industry is directly harmful to (alongside everyone else) the interests of everyone whose labour makes books exist—writers of fiction & nonfiction, illustrators, translators, researchers, editors, everyone.

The survey is open to non-members (I am not one) and to readers (who here is not &c.) so I encourage you to share your feelings on the matter. Don't assume that everyone already understands that AI is bad or why! I mean, people *should*, but you could say that about a lot of things.

Every creative person knows damn well that we're all talking about generative AI when it comes to this issue and that spellcheck is not part of the discussion. I heard this "but we'll have to ban [conflated technology] too" argument years ago, and I wasn't impressed by it then.

I just filled this out and I'm very concerned about answers and questions here which seem to be trying to conflate generative AI with spell check. Gives off a very squirrely vibe if you know what I mean.
