It's interesting to see people who sell hundreds of thousands of books talk about how they feel about a negative review. Mostly, because they get to feel about it in this detached, theoretical way -- in a way that doesn't hold the weight of their next book or the sales of their current book.

I wrote a second blog post about Butter, this one talking about its themes of sexuality and desire, the frustration of female desire and the modern serial killer, and how it compares to Chelsea Summer's A Certain Hunger:

I've read a lot of interesting books about both cults and serial killers over the past year. But the most interesting thing I've seen is that it seems we want to forgive and understand the serial killer while having no such feeling towards cult leaders. And I wonder why that is?

The quiet sound of the [washing] machine whirring and the sound of young girls' voices seemed to chase each other round and round, catching up with each other and blending together. _ Butter, Asako Yuzuki I'm almost done reading Butter, and I feel completely wrecked.

recently. This one took me a while to really get into, but I don't mind that. There's a certain point where you get to see all the threads of the narrative coming together and I find that very rewarding. (Comments that will be spoilery follow...)

Serious question: Why do most editors not include price ranges for their services on their websites? And should I be more wary of those that do or those that don't? Or is it just a personal preference thing?

Somedays writing is a 5k emotional spree -- and it's fantastic. Other days it's precision work on two paragraphs that just aren't saying what they need to -- and it's also fantastic.

Using a plot twist to explore identity dissolution in high-control groups: The Night We Burned by SF Kosa
loading . . .
Last Night IÂ Burned
Yesterday I finished The Night We Burned by S.F. Kosa. Reading it was a frustrating experience because it did so many things well in the literary conversation of cults, but they were dampened by a few authorial choices that overshadowed the otherwise great read. As usual, this blog post is not a review but a critique, and as such it has spoilers.

Today I learned... one of my meds would disqualify me from getting my pilot's license and the other would require me to get special issuance. Do I want to fly? No. But it's helpful in putting into perspective how much the psychiatric drugs we take may be affecting our awareness/judgment/responses.
