The challenge I have to everyone here: can you name all of your city elected officials? Influencing City / local / county government is often disturbingly easy. A lot of these governing bodies are actually desperate for "the public" to care beyond complaining about taxes. Just "show up!"

The first time I've been pleased to see a "Bike Lane Ends" sign.

A little salty that a Moving Container Street permit that occupies 2 parking spaces and is valid for 3 days cost $200, but Residential Parking Permits for the equivalent space and valid for 365 days would only cost $50 ($25/spot!)

It was 20 minutes of conversation with a woman I had never met before. It was so nice and brought two complete strangers together all for the main topic of the simple bicycle. The bicycle and active cities can heal society in a way that segregating car culture could never.

I was approached by a lady outside the gym today while parking my bike. She was likely in her 70s. She had such great questions about the bike and then proceeded to tell me about her ebike. She told me that she rode over 600 miles on it last year and was so proud of herself. She was so happy.

Cambridge isn't a big city, but it's not *small*--120K people total Last night 24K people voted (<50% of all voters) It only took 2372 votes (~10% of the votes!) to get a seat on city council Local elections turn on small margins. Go fight for one--or at least make the other side fight.

Polls close at 8pm in Cambridge MA! If you're eligible, make sure you vote in your local election (be out Cambridge or elsewhere) Don't sleep on municipal elections, these people will have an immediate and direct impact on your day to day life!

Just as a general piece of advice, it's a good idea to let your town and city officials know when you approve of something they do. It will encourage them to do more things like that in the future, and it's also just nice because they get hit with a lot of negativity.

Re-discovered this great demonstration of NYC's bendy flex posts while cleaning up my downloads folder, and thought it was timely share given the recent primaries! (In contrast, Cambridge's flex posts are usually rigid)

School streets is another one of those things where a bunch of neighborhoods will be virulently against it until they see it working in a lot of other neighborhoods and start complaining, "Why do those neighborhoods always get the good stuff?" This is exactly what happened with Citi Bike!

This morning I got to be an asshole pedestrian on my way to work and it. was. exhilarating. I push the flashy light button. All of the flashy lights work EXCEPT the panel above the far lane in the direction of travel for those cars. 🤷‍♀️ It is what it is. Traffic closest to me stops. I go

It's not just the blatant red light running, it's also the speed. When someone yells about a bicyclist running a red light or a stop sign, it's always helpful to point out they're not doing it with the weight of a car and enough speed to destroy a human being.

Hate car traffic? Support legislation that will make it more attractive for many of those people to walk, bike, or take transit. That's how you evaporate "traffic".

When our new mayor agreed to sit down with me and talk infrastructure, I made sure to bring my wife along and let her offer most of the feedback on the current status of our bike network. Leaders don't need to hear from middle-aged dudes on bikes. They need to hear from women, seniors, and kids.

Many people don't think they're advocates, or don't think they're necessarily doing "advocacy" because they don't have specific ideas about what they'd like to change. But simply sharing experiences and highlighting areas for improvement is realy valuable.

I was speaking to a friend and invited him to a bike/ped advocacy meeting I'm organizing with our town planner. My friend said he didn't think he had anything to contribute, but then said his wife won't bike on roads in town because she feels unsafe. That's *exactly* what the town needs to hear!

Wide bike lanes are good for drivers traveling the wrong way on a one-way street? Legitimately not sure where this driver came from....

It’s always wild to watch people oppose bike lanes and bus lanes in New York City and claim the city is making it hard to drive. Unless you’re in the Bronx, IT IS LITERALLY AN ISLAND. Where are the cars supposed to go? ISTG, we need to make a whole unit in HS geometry on mobility.
