This Thursday my committee will hear CB 25-0006, the first of what’s intended to be four annual zoning code modifications bills this term. It makes about 30 minor changes throughout the code, plus amendments adding changes, including striking parking requirements for up to 3 dwellings.

A 35-year old woman was killed while crossing the street in the 3500 block of Pulaski Hwy last night. The driver had run a red light and fled the scene after hitting her.

This update to zoning regulations allows for greater flexibility in housing types, intending to fill the current and future housing gap in Tacoma by replacing rigid single family zoning with middle housing, which is composed of multiple levels of low- and medium-density zoning.

Today with sponsor Del. Elizabeth Embry we launched the fight to bring justice to vulnerable road users by replacing Maryland's contributory negligence standard with a fairer one that recognizes that a human being hit by a car driver suffers more than a driver in a crash.

Planners made all these rules that confine new infill housing to commercial corridors and making sure it’s not too tall or imposing with the goal of blunting NIMBY backlash. It did not work: NIMBYs still fight new homes tooth and nail. We should let go of them and just build homes everywhere!
