YES! When I gave a lecture on US military power and command of the commands, I told my students I was about to show them a photo encapsulating US military dominance, and asked them to guess what it was. No one ever correctly guessed “unloading a mobile Burger King from a C-17.”

I still have the letter I sent my Congressman in 2013 supporting action against Assad. To paraphrase a friend, the Syrian Civil War shaped my worldview and there are few things I wanted to happen in world affairs more than to see the regime fall. I hope what comes next is better.

I saw a photo in 2012 or 2013, three girls on a swing in liberated Aleppo, smiling, laughing, happy, and it’s stuck in my mind ever since. I hope they survived the horrors of Assad, and can, with all Syrians, build a future of freedom, justice, and dignity in a new free Syria.
