Avenue Q is back! They even interviewed me after opening night I was prepared to talk political economy, but they asked about my favorite song instead. I went with “I Wish I Could Go Back to College” since this has been my life for the past 15 years… and yes, the undergrads do keep getting younger.

By ignoring international law, the US is reinforcing a dangerous lesson: the surest way for authoritarian regimes to avoid being bombed is to acquire nuclear weapons.

This is a chance to revive the green transition, which has been sidelined since Trump’s election Europe and China are partly insulated from oil shocks thanks to past investments in renewables, transit & EVs The US, by contrast, is far more exposed, and Trump has doubled down on that vulnerability.

Each of these outcomes would result in untold numbers of deaths and the destruction of the conditions necessary for many more people to live… but I suppose we should withhold judgment until the cost–benefit analysis is complete…?

This is not only incredibly weak, its false equivalence between Farage and Polanski is dangerous. One of them is a threat to liberal democracy, the other one is not. The text is a prime example of how radical centrism and the profound arrogance of self-declared liberals legitimize the far right

The Home Office has hired IFF Research to survey current visa holders about how proposed changes to settlement rules might affect their plans. Some of the questions are strange, e.g. asking whether I’ve used welfare services and whether rule changes tied to these would affect my settlement plans.

Only three Republicans (two in the House and one in the Senate) voted today to curb Trump’s war powers The so called “anti-war” faction on the right gets a lot of media attention, but it barely registers in Congress. I see little evidence it’s durably shaping policy.

This quote is apocryphal. As far as I can ascertain, Orwell never wrote it. He did criticize pacifism and believed some degree of state coercion could be necessary, but he also opposed the kind of gratuitous displays of force and insidious state propaganda embraced by Noem and this administration.

It’s striking that Kristi Noem’s killing of her puppy, Cricket, provoked more outrage by Republicans than allegations of self-dealing, the deaths of two American citizens, the detention of hundreds more, countless migrant deaths and due-process violations linked to 605,000 deportations.
