It shouldn't have taken a genocide to get Canada to recognize Palestine as a state. And recognition must not be a substitute for real, meaningful, concerted and collective action to end the genocide and erasure of Gaza and the West Bank.

While I understand the impulse to say that recognition of Palestine is 'too little, too late', I don't agree. It is late & getting here came at too great a cost. But we can't afford cynicism. Recognition is the right thing to do, & every opportunity to do the right thing must be taken.

It is important & I am very happy that those who peddled the logic of collective punishment by claiming that recognition of Palestine “rewards” Hamas lost their effort to deny Palestinians their basic human right to self-determination. Recognition is not a reward. It is a right.
