About 20 frogs in the garden pond this morning, and the first spawn of the year (last year, the first was around 4 March). Sad that I can’t be at home today to watch them. Made a little step forward on the linocut of a Barn Owl I'm working on. First block carved ✔️. I made the drawing for this print from a real life Barn Owl at a wildlife drawing session in Margate last year.

I’m trying to make a new #linocut print every month in 2026. (OK, it’s true that I’m on the first one and it’s already mid-February, but nevermind.) Here’s my progress this weekend. I’m using one piece of lino to print all the colours, one after the other. This is called the ‘reduction’ method.

Managed to fit in the final Winter Bird Survey visit to one of our squares this morning (since it wasn’t raining). More skylarks this time but still not a lot going on, to be honest. The path along the riverbank was very muddy - not my favourite…

The peel and reveal moment on my latest Tetrapak Print. I'll put up a nice still image of the print soon, but it's always fun to witness the magic moment the first print comes off the plate, and you get the euphoria of loving it or the dismay of not loving it. You might well ask how a predator that eats birds gets dosed with rat poison? Answer: people chuck it everywhere and it's in insects, songbirds, everything.

I think engagement here is pretty dead. Very hard to move the needle. I've read a few sensible articles about big decline in social media engagement lately. My recommendation is to blow a vuvuzela out of your window whenever you've done a new drawing. That's what I'm doing anyway.

For a change it wasn’t raining this morning, so we did a @btobirds.bsky.social Winter Bird Survey. Despite the rowers, little grebes, moorhens and mallards were on the Cam. Treecreeper was one of the highlights (hard to find on the edge of the Fens!) and a red kite had 20 magpies to keep it company

A pair each of robins and woodpigeons seem to be thinking about nesting in the garden already. The pigeons have revisited one of last year’s nests and were looking cosy together. The robins are hanging around near to each other and one pecked at some possible nest material. #spring

✂️ Yesterday I finally responded to @agakowalska.bsky.social’s challenge to make a collage from a single piece of packaging. I present to you a green (tea) woodpecker, made from a big Yorkshire Tea box. It was fun and I’ll be rooting through our recycling bin for more materials later on ♻️

3/4 On really cold nights, wrens are triggered into communal roosting to conserve body heat. You'll notice that I placed a temperature probe in this nest box and the differential in ext/int temperature was remarkable. As soon as milder weather arrives the birds revert to roosting singly or in pairs.

It’s about -1 C outside, getting dark, and a robin is having a bath in the plant saucer of water I put out earlier (the pond has remained frozen all day today). Don’t forget that Birds Need Baths! 🥶

We did another @btobirds.bsky.social #WinterBirdSurvey this morning. This square has a section by the Cam and then a rather dull walk through nondescript farmland. Not much in the fallow? stubble? rubbish crop (whatever it is) this time. A marsh harrier over the river was the highlight.
