This looks like a cartoon but it’s actually quite an accurate depiction of a golden-headed manakin. I’m having fun mixing my media and trying to get better at painting for #Birbfest, hosted by @monkeymintaka.bsky.social over on Instagram.

3/4 On really cold nights, wrens are triggered into communal roosting to conserve body heat. You'll notice that I placed a temperature probe in this nest box and the differential in ext/int temperature was remarkable. As soon as milder weather arrives the birds revert to roosting singly or in pairs.

It’s about -1 C outside, getting dark, and a robin is having a bath in the plant saucer of water I put out earlier (the pond has remained frozen all day today). Don’t forget that Birds Need Baths! 🥶

Day 1 of #Birbfest2026 challenge hosted by @monkeymintaka.bsky.social on Instagram and the prompt is ‘bronze-winged pigeon’ which Wikipedia says is a group of Aussie pigeons. So I picked the Spinifex pigeon because it has a fantastic crest and because I remembered learning about Spinifex at school!

We did another @btobirds.bsky.social #WinterBirdSurvey this morning. This square has a section by the Cam and then a rather dull walk through nondescript farmland. Not much in the fallow? stubble? rubbish crop (whatever it is) this time. A marsh harrier over the river was the highlight.

COLD but sunny today at @suffolkwildlife.bsky.social Lackford Lakes today. There was a green-winged teal that was attracting lots of attention, but the (much closer) Eurasian teals, lapwings, shovelers, wigeons etc were just much fun to watch.

I felt like trying something new, so here’s my first-ever attempt at #pochoir, which is French for stencil. I cut my stencils from plastic leftover from packaging I received - I knew it would come in useful for something!

The sun is out (!). I looked out of the window before going into the garden and a sparrowhawk flew in and perched briefly in our neighbour’s tree. Then once I was outside, a common darter was basking and flew up and landed on my shoulder! What will be the third lucky nature thing today? 🤔
