@mrphoenix.bsky.social I know you dream of seeing me draw pages on paper again. This morning I tried to work out what tools I'd use on A4 paper if I had to in case of, say, a months-long emergency. After several attempts, these were the first drawings that looked half right. Just for you.

Some cartoonists become slaves to their panache and devolve into self-parody, while others hone their technique until they've exorcised all the wonk and their work dries out. This career is a tightrope from start to finish.

Sometimes cartoonists my age decry hot new talent as stylists being praised for idiosyncrasies instead of good drawing, but I think readers have always keyed on easily identifiable quirks which have just occasionally aligned with high fidelity drawing. Chops are nice, but no substitute for verve.

I just looked at the page I have to draw tomorrow and it features the first appearance (following 15 years of invisibility) of Claire Little's mother. I haven't designed her. I have no idea what she'd look like. Who would marry Fire Chief Little? How do I reverse engineer this in 12 hours?

This is very specific but it might help other cartoonists. I came up with a pressure curve for Clip Studio on the iPad which makes it easier to go backwards and forwards (especially inking) from your desktop Cintiq setup. No blowouts on iPad strokes at what would be normal pressure on the Cintiq.

Looking for my clipboard (exciting times) I found the notebook with the notes for the original (often very different) versions of Wobbly Head, NEMS 2&3, Great British Bump Off, and several abandoned projects, all end-of-pandemic brain collapse with loads of sketches. Would this make a good zine?
